The kind that you can smell from your kitchen countertop. Tropical fruit trailing behind, green still clinging to the edges. Galangal cuts through, sharp and peppery. Kaffir lime lifts it, bright and citrus-green. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"\u003eSome light florals drift in next, but this note isn't strong. Soft wood settles as well.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"\u003eBase comes along with Mild resin, clean timber, nothing dark or heavy. This oud takes you to a coastal orchard at the edge of a gem town, fruit trees planted where the soil runs red with laterite, salt air drifting in off the river. It's the smell of somewhere easy, somewhere you would visit on vacation, no work or offices here. You know, sacks of dried tamarind piled up, black pepper dust in the air, ever so slight. Smell that gets into your clothes and doesn't leave. Underneath that you get the raisins, dried, like it has left out in the sun too long.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThere are some slight animalic bits, but ever so. So light that it won't turn away oud novices. But enough so that there's this ferality to the oil. It develops when on the skin. Watch how it morphs into something else. Blackcurrant up front. Almost sticky-sweet... Think sap on bark. The berry and the resin trade places depending on how long it's been on skin.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"\u003eThere's a jammy quality that comes and goes, blackcurrant reduced down in a pan, thick and a little tangy at the edges. Also no feral note here, no barnyard. This oud lingers within fruit-and-wood territory the whole way through.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"\u003eIt's got some apricot. And also it's heavy on the skin. Really clings to you. This oud isn't floral sweet, it's berry-sweet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"\u003eDries down to some grassy notes, reminds me of bamboo and freshly cut wood. Reminiscent of Moss and soil. Forest floor, moist soil. Fresh leaves blowing in the wind. Who doesn't love the notes of fresh cut grass. Imagine walking on the forest floor after a summer storm, with the sun coming back through the canopy.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDon't underestimate the sweetness. It's light, but it's present, a little bit of golden-brown sugar crystals. This oud isn't exactly sweet in the fruity sense like some of my other ouds. It's sweet in the gourmand vanilla + sugar sense. But still less vanilla and more sugar. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is a very nice smokey note. Many ouds have smokey notes that are a little bit burnt. I'm not a fan of those, and I doubt many people are. This Merauke has as beautiful balance of smoke along with the earthiness. Crisp dry Logs in the forest, beside a warm cozy campfire. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis oud is grounded, and slow. It's got calm written all over it. Gives me an ache, yearning for a few months in the countryside. It's comfortable and secure.
