1. How do I know if the oud I'm buying is genuine?
Genuine oud has a complex, multi-layered scent profile — earthy, resinous, woody, and sometimes fruity or floral depending on origin.
Synthetic or adulterated oud tends to smell flat and one-dimensional. At The Oud Trader, every product is sourced directly from verified growers and distillers across Southeast Asia and beyond, with each origin clearly labeled.
2. Can I purchase samples before committing to a full purchase?
Yes — we offer sample sets that let you explore multiple origins and expressions before investing in a full piece or bottle. It's the best way to find your oud.
3. Do you ship internationally?
Yes. We ship worldwide from Singapore, with tracked shipping on all orders. Delivery times vary by destination, and all orders are carefully packaged to ensure oils are sealed and chips are protected in transit.
4. What is oud, and why is it so expensive?
Oud (agarwood) is a rare resinous wood formed when certain Aquilaria trees become infected with a specific mold. The tree produces a dark, fragrant resin as a defense — and only a small percentage of trees ever form it. The rarity of wild-harvest material, combined with centuries of demand across the Middle East, South Asia, and now Western niche perfumery, makes genuine oud one of the most valuable raw materials in the world.
5. How long does oud oil last on skin?
High-quality oud oil is can last anywhere from 6 to 12+ hours on skin, and even more, depending on body chemistry, application point, and the specific oil.
6. What's the difference between wild-harvest and cultivated oud?
Wild-harvest oud comes from trees that developed resin naturally in the forest — rarer, more complex, and significantly more expensive.
Cultivated oud is farmed using controlled inoculation methods to trigger resin formation. Both can be excellent quality; cultivated oud has made premium oud more accessible without sacrificing character when done well.
7. How much oud oil should I apply?
Less than you think. Oud oil is highly concentrated — one to two small dabs is typically enough.
It's not like alcohol-based perfume; it doesn't spray and dissipate. Start conservatively, let it settle on your skin for a few minutes, then layer more if needed.
8. What does oud actually smell like?
Oud defies simple description — it varies dramatically by origin, harvest method, and age.
Common descriptors include woody, resinous, smoky, earthy, leathery, and animalic, with sweeter or greener top notes depending on the source.
Cambodian oud tends toward smooth and honeyed; Indian oud toward deep and barnyard; Indonesian toward dark and earthy. The best way to understand it is to smell it.
9. Do your oils contain any synthetic additives or carrier oils?
Our oud oils are pure distillates — no synthetic extenders, no carrier dilution unless explicitly stated on the product listing.
What you receive is the oil as it came from the distillation vessel, nothing added.
10. Is oud suitable as a gift?
Absolutely — oud has centuries of tradition as a luxury gift across the Middle East and South Asia.
A well-chosen oil or a curated sample set makes an exceptional gift for fragrance lovers, those interested in Middle Eastern culture, or anyone who appreciates rare and natural materials.
